The open-world survival-craft genre has a terrifying new contender. Dark Point Games has officially released the gameplay trailer for Brightfall, offering players their first comprehensive look at a cursed world where the absence of light is not just a visual mechanic, it is a lethal, physical threat.
Set to launch into PC Steam Early Access in 2026, the game has already been described by previewers as a unique fusion of Valheim's base-building mechanics and the fantastical, slightly horrific aesthetics of games like Fable and Don't Starve.
What is Brightfall?
Brightfall is an open-world survival roguelite designed for 1 to 4 players. The game is set in the year 1666, immediately following the Great Plague of London. Players take on the role of prisoners shipped off to a cursed Celtic island that has been deliberately erased from all English maps.
This island is consumed by a "living darkness" that can physically bend trees, poison plants, and corrupt anything caught outside the light. Your only defense against this corruption is literal illumination.
The Gameplay Loop | Build the Light, Push Back the Dark
The newly released gameplay trailer highlights a tactical, deliberately paced combat system. The developers have emphasized that encounters require high-stakes resource management rather than pure button-mashing.
Players start with nothing and must scavenge to survive. At the center of your base is the Brightheart, a magical crystal that powers your refuge. You must continually gather resources to upgrade your base from a simple campfire into an automated fortress featuring sawmills, quarries, and iron forges. Eventually players advance from swinging primitive iron blades to firing crafted muskets.
Because the darkness acts as both a physical barrier and an enemy buff, you cannot sprint into the gloom. You must actively "carve a circle of safety" by building and placing light sources to push the corruption back step by step. When focused, light can be weaponized to weaken enemies, stun bosses, and interrupt attacks.
