Sony's June 2, 2026 State of Play opened with the moment fans have been waiting years for: an extended gameplay reveal for Marvel's Wolverine. Developed by Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel's Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Adjacent, the trailer delivered the first deep look at Logan's tone, brutal combat system, and story arc, and confirmed a hard release date.

Story | Reavers, Captured Mutants, and Bolivar Trask
The trailer reveals Logan on a rescue mission tracking down captured mutants being hunted by a cybernetic militia known as the Reavers, operating under orders to deliver their captives to Bolivar Trask, the infamous creator of the Sentinels. The setting is gritty and grounded, a stark departure from the relatively family-friendly tone of Insomniac's Spider-Man titles.
Combat System | Rage Meter and Berserker Mode
Combat revolves around a Rage Meter built by landing combos, parrying, and performing executions. At peak tier, Logan enters a feral, monochromatic "Black, White, and Blood" state that unlocks brutal Critical Strikes. The gameplay also features real-time procedural body damage, requiring players to manage Logan's iconic passive healing factor as wounds accumulate and visibly close between encounters.
Insomniac is not softening the source material. The trailer prominently features limb dismemberment, visceral takedowns, and an R-rated combat philosophy that the studio confirmed is core to the design, not a toggle or difficulty modifier.
AI Companions | Jean Grey and Sabretooth
While Marvel's Wolverine is strictly a single-player, narrative-driven game, Logan will not always fight alone. The trailer confirmed two iconic X-Men as AI-controlled combat companions:
- Jean Grey uses telekinetic abilities to open up enemies for Logan's finishers and can suppress enemy perception during stealth sequences.
- Sabretooth features a competitive, kill-stealing dynamic where he actively swoops in on Logan's targets, triggering aggressive combat banter and a rivalry tension throughout fights.
Game Director Mike Daly addressed multiplayer questions directly following the showcase: "This game is all about Wolverine and you play Wolverine the whole way through. We wanted to keep the focus on him throughout the whole story."
No Spider-Man Crossover | Earth-1048 Confirmed Separate
Insomniac formally confirmed that while Marvel's Wolverine shares the same universe as their Spider-Man games (Earth-1048), there will be no crossover and no appearance by Peter Parker or Miles Morales in this story. The two franchises run in parallel within the same continuity but remain narratively independent.
Why This Matters
Insomniac's Spider-Man series redefined what a licensed superhero game could be. A Mature-rated Wolverine title from the same studio, with a September 15 release date and full creative freedom to embrace the character's violent roots, is one of the most anticipated PS5 exclusives of the year. The Marvel's Wolverine hub has full ongoing coverage. See also: everything announced at the June 2 State of Play.
