Twenty-five years after Master Chief first crash-landed on a mysterious alien ringworld, Xbox is shipping its most consequential franchise revival in a decade. Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and, notably, PlayStation 5, built from scratch by Halo Studios in Unreal Engine 5 with three brand-new missions, a fully remade audio and cinematics layer, and no competitive PvP.
The game is not a remaster. It is a complete rebuild of the 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved campaign on a new engine, made by the same studio that formerly operated as 343 Industries before its 2024 rebrand. Here is everything confirmed before the July 28 release.

1. What Halo Studios Actually Built | UE5 from Scratch, Not a Port
The distinction between a remaster and a ground-up remake matters for understanding what is new and what is preserved. Halo Studios did not port the original Bungie engine to current hardware with upgraded textures. The source code of the 2001 game is not present.
Every system was re-engineered in Unreal Engine 5: new animation rigs, a rebuilt physics simulation for vehicle and projectile behavior, redesigned enemy AI behavior trees, a full Lumen global illumination implementation across all ten original levels, and a Nanite geometry pipeline enabling dense, high-fidelity terrain without the LOD popping that defined the original's outdoor environments.
The audio mix and cinematics were remade in their entirety. Principal cast members re-recorded all dialogue. The soundtrack draws from the original Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori compositions but has been re-recorded with a full live orchestra and expanded arrangements across new mission content.
Why It Matters:
2. Operation Meteorite | 3 New Missions, Troy Denning, Covenant Ship Combat
The centerpiece addition to Campaign Evolved is Operation Meteorite, a three-mission story arc set approximately one year before the events of the main campaign. It is co-written by Troy Denning, the veteran author behind the Halo: Forerunner Saga novels and multiple entries in the extended fiction canon.
The three missions follow Master Chief and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson infiltrating a Covenant agricultural ship. Halo Studios has confirmed the following about Operation Meteorite:
- Setting: A Covenant agricultural vessel in active operation, introducing an interior environment type not present in the original ten missions.
- Space combat: At least one mission includes an exterior space segment, confirmed as the first time mainline Halo campaign play has featured zero-gravity EVA combat since Halo: Reach.
- New enemy variants: Covenant troop configurations specific to the agricultural ship setting, including new support unit types not present in the base game.
- Drivable Covenant Wraith: Players can pilot a Wraith anti-grav tank during at least one Operation Meteorite sequence. This is the first time the original Combat Evolved setting has featured a player-operated Wraith.
Denning's involvement is significant beyond the writing credit. His novels established narrative continuity between the Bungie-era fiction and 343 Industries' post-Halo 3 material. Operation Meteorite is positioned as canon within the current Halo fiction timeline.
Original Information:
3. Sandbox Overhaul | 9 New Weapons, Hijackable Vehicles, Modern Mobility
Beyond Operation Meteorite, the original ten missions have received a full sandbox expansion. Halo Studios confirmed nine additional weapons have been pulled from across the franchise's history and rebalanced for the Combat Evolved setting. Confirmed additions include the Battle Rifle and the Energy Sword, both of which were absent from the 2001 original's weapon roster.
The mobility layer has been upgraded to align with modern expectations. Specific confirmed changes:
- Refined targeting: Aim assist and bullet magnetism have been recalibrated across all weapons. The original's notorious Pistol stopping power is preserved but the targeting feel has been modernized.
- Vehicle hijacking: Players can now perform boarding moves on occupied enemy vehicles in the base campaign levels. The Wraith and Banshee support player takeover via the same hijacking system introduced in Halo 2.
- Movement upgrades: Crouch timing and sprint behavior have been tuned to current standards. Exact movement speed values have not been published but Halo Studios described the feel as “faithful to the Bungie era with contemporary responsiveness.”
4. Campaign Remix Mode | 42 Skulls, Third-Person, Floor is Lava
Campaign Evolved introduces a Campaign Remix mode with 42 gameplay-modifying Skulls, the largest Skull count in any Halo title. The Skull system originated in Halo 2 as hidden collectibles that altered gameplay when activated. Remix mode makes all 42 available from the start as toggleable modifiers.
Two Skulls confirmed by Halo Studios:
- Perspective: Switches the entire campaign to a third-person over-the-shoulder camera, converting Combat Evolved's first-person gameplay into a third-person action game with a dedicated camera rig built specifically for this mode.
- Floor is Lava: Master Chief takes continuous damage whenever he makes contact with ground terrain. Intended as a high-difficulty novelty modifier that rewards platform awareness and vehicle use.
Multiple Skulls can be stacked simultaneously. Halo Studios confirmed score multipliers apply based on the number of active difficulty-increasing Skulls, preserving the competitive scoring meta that dedicated Halo speedrunners and challenge runners rely on.
5. Co-Op, Crossplay and PS5 | No PvP, 4-Player Online, Local Split-Screen
Campaign Evolved is the first mainline Halo title to launch on PlayStation hardware. Microsoft confirmed PS5 availability simultaneously with the Xbox and PC announcement. Cross-platform play connects Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC players in the same co-op sessions with shared progression.
The co-op structure:
- Online co-op: Up to 4 players simultaneously across all platforms via crossplay. Full campaign access including Operation Meteorite missions.
- Local split-screen: 2-player local co-op on console. Halo Studios confirmed split-screen is retained and runs at a locked 60fps on Xbox Series X and PS5.
- No PvP: Competitive arena multiplayer is not present. Halo Studios described the decision as intentional rather than a post-launch addition, framing Campaign Evolved as a complete standalone experience focused entirely on the cooperative campaign.
We are not building a live service or a multiplayer platform. We are building the definitive Halo campaign experience. Everything in the game serves that singular goal.

Context:
7. Why This Matters | Halo Studios First Post-Rebrand Title, PS5 Precedent
Campaign Evolved is the first title shipped under the Halo Studios name after the 2024 rebrand from 343 Industries. The rebrand followed the turbulent post-launch period of Halo Infinite, which launched to strong campaign reviews in 2021 but saw its live-service multiplayer struggle to retain players against competing titles throughout 2022 and 2023.
Halo Studios' explicit decision to ship a focused, single-player-first title with no live-service component represents the most direct possible response to the criticism that Infinite prioritized battle pass economics over campaign quality.
The PS5 availability also sets a precedent for how Microsoft positions its gaming portfolio in the post-exclusivity era. Campaign Evolved is neither the first Microsoft title to reach PlayStation nor the last. But it is the first time the Halo franchise, historically the defining Xbox exclusive, has launched simultaneously on a competing platform. That framing will matter for the next several years of Microsoft gaming strategy regardless of how Resynced reviews.
