Burnout Meets Podracing | Star Wars Galactic Racer Brings High-Octane Roguelite Racing to the Outer Rim

Developed by former Burnout and Need for Speed veterans at Fuse Games, Star Wars: Galactic Racer brings high-octane repulsorcraft racing and a roguelite campaign to consoles this October.

For over two decades, Star Wars fans have been begging Lucasfilm Games to revisit the thrilling, high-speed adrenaline rush of titles like Star Wars Episode I: Racer. Following a series of blockbuster trailers showcased throughout the first half of this year, most recently culminating in a deep-dive gameplay preview at Summer Game Fest, those prayers have officially been answered.

Enter Star Wars: Galactic Racer, an upcoming racing adventure built on Unreal Engine 5 and slated to hit store shelves on October 6, 2026.

The pedigree behind the title is stellar. The game is the debut project from Fuse Games, a Guildford-based independent studio founded by Criterion Games alumni, the legendary developers behind the Burnout and Need for Speed franchises. Unsurprisingly, they are bringing that exact brand of aggressive, high-risk, smash-and-shunt vehicle combat to a galaxy far, far away. Conan Boyle reports for the Gaming and Culture Desk. 1. The Core Twist | A Runs-Based Roguelite Story Mode

While the game features standard arcade modes, time trials, and 12-player online PvP matches with a dedicated ranking system, the true centerpiece of Galactic Racer is its single-player campaign. Instead of a traditional linear progression tracking tournament brackets, the campaign plays out as an intense, narrative-focused roguelite.

Set in the lawless Outer Rim during the New Republic Era, shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi, players step into the boots of Shade, a mysterious lone pilot with a bitter vendetta against Kestar Bool, the tyrannical champion dominating the newly founded Galactic League.

How a Galactic Tour Works:

The Loop: Players spend a League Entry Token to embark on a multi-planet competitive tour across three randomized acts. Each planet route offers unique rewards, allowing you to salvage tech scraps to upgrade your vehicle's core stats including Afterburner capacity, Battery capacity, Cornering mechanics, and Ramjet impact power.

Permadeath on the Track: If you crash your vehicle completely or fail to place in the top three of an event, your League Entry Token is permanently revoked. Your run ends immediately, stripping away your active vehicle components and forcing you to claw your way back through qualifier matches to earn a fresh token. This risk-reward loop is the clearest signal of Fuse Games' Burnout heritage, adapting the tension of crash-break physics into a structural mechanic.

2. Choosing Your Repulsorcraft | Four Playstyle Classes

To keep races tactically distinct, Fuse Games has divided the garage into four vehicle categories, each sporting highly specialized handling mechanics and physics:

Landspeeders

Heavy Chassis

Durable chassis built to take massive punishment. Trade top-line acceleration for extreme endurance and rely on wide, sweeping drifts to navigate tight turns. Best for aggressive ramming and surviving extended races.

Speeder Bikes

Kinetic Burst

Hyper-agile glass cannons with quick acceleration profiles. Utilize a unique Kinetic Burst ability to dodge oncoming obstacles, but can be obliterated easily by heavier opponents. Reward precise reflexes over endurance.

Skimspeeders

Knife Edge Banking

A brand-new vehicle class introduced natively to Star Wars canon by this game. Specializes in tight banking maneuvers that let skilled pilots skim sideways through slot canyons. The class opens new shortcut routes unavailable to other vehicle types.

Podracers

Straight-Line Velocity

The undisputed kings of straight-line speed. Massive roaring engines tethered to tiny cockpits dominate long stretches of track but require exceptional reflex timing to handle at top velocity. High risk, highest reward.

The track layout reinforces this variety. Tracks spanning across six iconic worlds, including the frozen wastes of Ando Prime, the battle-scarred desert of Jakku, and the lush tropical canopies of Lantaana, intentionally lack a single standardized racing line. Instead, tracks feature distinct high and low routes explicitly optimized for different craft classes, ensuring no single vehicle type dominates every circuit. For comparison with another high-speed vehicle game, see the Crazy Taxi World Tour AI controversy coverage.

3. Technical Prowess on Unreal Engine 5 | 4K/60 and Lumen GI

Visually, the game is shaping up to be an absolute showpiece for current-generation hardware. Built entirely on Unreal Engine 5, a recent performance breakdown from Digital Foundryconfirmed that the game utilizes high-end Lumen global illumination to capture the intense sun-glare of Tatooine and dynamic reflections off ice sheets.

The base version targets a razor-sharp 4K resolution at a locked 60 frames per second on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with specific graphics enhancement profiles quietly being finalized to take advantage of the upgraded hardware specs on the PS5 Pro. For the latest Unreal Engine developments, see the Unreal Engine hub.

PS5 Pro enhancements confirmed: While standard PS5 targets 4K/60, early reports indicate the PS5 Pro will offer an optional 40fps ray-traced mode with enhanced Lumen quality and higher-resolution shadow maps. Fuse Games has not yet announced a PC spec sheet, but the Steam page lists Lumen GI and DLSS support among confirmed features.

4. Price and Pre-Order Framework | Standard and Deluxe Editions

Star Wars: Galactic Racer is officially available for digital pre-order across all storefronts right now ahead of its October rollout:

  • Standard Edition ($59.99 USD): Includes the base game and immediate access to the core launch garage.
  • Deluxe Edition ($79.99 USD): Packs in the base game alongside a variety of vintage cosmetic options, including returning classic legacy podracers and pilot suits modeled after fan-favoriteEpisode I icons like Sebulba and Ben Quadinaros.

Pre-order customers on any platform receive an exclusive in-game livery set themed after Anakin Skywalker's original podracer color scheme from The Phantom Menace. The game launches globally on October 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

We wanted to capture the sensation of podracing that made the movie sequence unforgettable, but give it the structural depth of a modern roguelike. Every run should feel like its own story.
